The classes will be held at the Scandinavian School, 20 Woodside Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94127. The semester consists of 8 weekly lessons – each lesson an hour and a half. The cost is $280 per session . There is also a one time registration fee of $25 for first time students. Approximately $30 for teaching materials initially. The materials can be used for multiple classes.

The Schedule:
Beginner 1 and the Conversation Class runs from January 23 until March 19. No class on February 20 due to President’s Day.   Intermediate 1 and 2 runs from February 8 until March 28.

The Classes
Classes are small (typical 10 students), which gives us lots of time for individual attention. Beginning and intermediate students will be using the text book Colloquial Danish by W. Glyn Jones and Kirsten Gade available at Amazon or through your book store (please get second edition published in 2003 or a newer version). Articles from newspapers and magazines, song texts, music, picture collages, video clips, audio tapes, etc. will also be part of a fun and engaging curriculum in all classes.

Conversation Class:
The conversation class is a new class that we are offering for 8 weeks this fall. This class focus on Danish conversation and is open to everyone who as already taken beginner 1 and is enrolled in beginner 2 or a higher level of Danish.This class is a good complement to all other level classes and will be running in parallel with the beginner 2 class on Monday nights.

Beginners 1:
This is a class for the student with no prior knowledge of the language. We will focus on basic Danish grammar and sentence structure and gradually build up our vocabulary.

Beginners 2:
This class is targeting students with at least 8 classes of Beginners or a very basic knowledge of Danish grammar and sentence structure. (The class follows the text book “Colloquial Danish” and will continue the curriculum from Chapter 6). We gradually build up our vocabulary and speak Danish. The focus is on practicing face-to-face communication in typical everyday situations. We read and write short texts and will also train our capabilities deciphering Danish through songs and taped conversations.

Intermediate 1:
In this class, students read and write essays while practicing more conversation through role plays, interview and listening exercises. We still talk about grammar and vocabulary, but we also begin to create scenarios, in which we can talk about more complex topics. Grammatical issues will still be explained in English, but we try to keep much of the class in Danish.

Intermediate 2:
Intermediate 2 is for the student, who has taken at least one intermediate 1 semester (8 classes) or has equivalent experience. We continue the curriculum from intermediate 1 but will soon move into new textbook material as the class finishes the “Colloquial Danish” book used so far. Emphasis is on speaking Danish as much as possible in class but grammar and more complex topics will still be explained in English.

Advanced
In the advanced class, the spoken language will primarily be Danish and emphasis is on conversation. This is not (necessarily) a class for students almost fluent in Danish, but as the class is conducted mainly in Danish, students should be able to interact with the teacher and the other students in Danish. Grammar exercises will be tailored the most common problems in student essays.

Your Teachers:
Mette Hjermind
Mette has a background in journalism. She has done both her B.A and M.A within this field and worked at regional newspapers in Denmark before pursuing a freelance career in the Bay Area. Mette currently writes for a number of Danish and American publications and handles some of the PR for Innovation Center Denmark in Palo Alto. She also arranges study tours for Danish groups visiting the US. She has taught Danish at Berlitz, worked as a Danish localizer/translator at Yahoo! and is currently doing Danish language tutoring at her home in Bolinas. Here, the youngest “students” are her four-year old daughter Elisabeth and infant son Lars.

Pernille Pradel Øland lived in Denmark until she moved to SF almost 5 years ago. She lives with her Danish husband and their two girls aged 4.5 and 2. Before moving to San Francisco, Pernille worked as a certified SAP consultant in the IT department of a large Real Estate company in Denmark. She also served as an instructor, teaching the employees how to use SAP as well as Windows XP and Office.
