Norwegian Classes - Winter '10

During the winter season of 2010, The Scandinavian School in San Francisco (SSSF) will offer two series of Norwegian language courses at the Beginning and Intermediate levels. The classes will be held at SSSF, 20 Woodside Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94127.

The session will consist of 8 weekly lessons - each lesson an hour and a half. The classes are small (max. 10 students per class) to allow for excellent individual attention. See the course descriptions below for more details. All classes are filled on a first come first serve basis - please get your applications in early to ensure a spot in the class.

The Classes

Beginner:

Upon completion of this course the students will be able to speak and understand easy-to-learn sentences and expressions commonly used when visiting Norway. The course will focus on correct pronunciation, simple conversation, vocabulary expansion, and basic grammar. Topics taught will include numbers, letters, food, days-of-the-week, months, seasons, and other useful words and phrases. Weekly homework will be assigned.

Intermediate:
The focus of this course will be to expand on the language skills the students learned in SSSF’s "Beginning Norwegian" course (or which they may otherwise bring to the class). Upon completion of the Intermediate course the students will be able to engage in more complete conversations with other speakers of the Norwegian language. We will discuss topics like vacations, work, family, food, hobbies, interests, and cultural issues. Emphasis will be placed on vocabulary expansion, more advanced grammar, and correct pronunciation. Conversations in Norwegian will be practiced as much as possible, and weekly homework will be assigned.

The textbook used for all Norwegian language classes at SSSF is called "Teach Yourself Norwegian" by Margaretha Danbolt Simons (2004 Edition). It is recommended that the students get the version that comes with two CDs, so they can also practice listening and pronunciation on their own. The students are expected to obtain their own textbook and bring it with them to the first night of class.
