We welcome anyone interested in Nordic cultures and traditions to participate in our cultural events and celebrations. Below are examples of events that SSCC hosts annually.

Easter Arts & Crafts

Feathers, chicks and hand painted eggs are all a part of our Scandinavian traditional do-it-your-own “påskpyssel”. This event is suitable for children between 2 - 10 years old and their caregivers. Påskgumman also flies in on her broom from Blåkulla, to join us and make sure that everybody gets a treat for Easter.

Christmas Arts & Crafts

Our Christmas Arts & Crafts is a traditional do-it-your-own “julpyssel” for children between 2-10 years old and their caregivers. We make different kinds of traditional Christmas crafts in all shapes and forms, munch on some gingerbread cookies and have some glögg, a typical mulled drink for the season. Santa also stops by for a visit, all the way from the North Pole.

Baking workshops for adults

During the school year we offer different kinds of baking events for adults. Our events feature typical Scandinavian pastries or bread. Kanelbullar (cinnamon buns) semlor (lent buns), knäckebröd (crisp bread) and rågbröd (rye bread) are some of the things that our bakers have tried their hands on in the past. The events are conducted in English.

Kanelbullar (cinnamon buns) semlor (lent buns), dammsugare (vacuums) and chokladbollar (chocolate balls)! Our young bakers get very busy during these baking events, suitable for children between 5- 12 years old. The baking events are conducted in a Scandinavian language.

Floorball (innebandy)

Come play a fun game of floorball (innebandy) together! For kids K-5, all levels welcome! Innebandy was first played in Gothenburg, Sweden, in the 1970s. It is a type of floor hockey with sticks and a plastic ball with holes, which is played by all ages and is very popular in Scandinavia. We will provide the sticks and balls, just bring a water bottle and shin guards (optional) and your Scandinavian spirit!

Viking Run

Come run, trot or skip like a Viking!  Put on your horns and bring your friends, family and fellow vikings to this 5K fun run in Golden Gate Park. The race also features kids dash distances for the little vikings to enjoy their own race.  Light food and beverages will be served and entertainment for all ages provided. Come join the fun!

Danish Fastelavn

Wear your best dress-up costumes and come join us in celebrating a traditional Danish Fastelavn! Traditional baked fastelavnsboller will be served, and there will also be a “best dress-up” contest. We will make fastelavnsris and “slå katten af tønden” (beat the cat out of the barrel - similar to a piñata), to chase away the lingering spirit of winter. The event is suitable for children between 2-10 years old and their caregivers.

Lego Workshop

It inspires creativity and curiosity, and is one of the most well known and beloved toys in the world! Please join us at the Scandinavian School and Cultural Center for a fun Lego workshop filled with activity and play. Who can build the highest tower, the fastest car and the most creative building? As an extra treat, whatever you build, you get to bring home! The event is suitable for children between 5 and 10 years old.
